Getting Organized After a Long, Fun Summer

After a fun-filled and free-spirited summer, getting back into a routine can take quite a bit of effort.  Long, lazy days in the summer have given way to a new school year for kids and a myriad of family activities and commitments. To help make the transition a little easier, we have compiled list of suggestions to get you back into a smooth routine.

 

Lay out everyone’s clothing the night before.  You’ll save so much decision time in the morning if your outfit is already ready to go!  Plus you won’t lose time fighting the battle with your kids about their wardrobe in the morning hours when things are hectic.  Really get-ahead and pack lunches ahead of time and leave them in the fridge overnight!

 

Have a good breakfast.  It really is the most important meal of the day, so skipping or even skimping will affect you the rest of the day.  It doesn’t take long to have a healthy and hearty breakfast.  Plan for breakfast the night before. Get your morning started off right and you’re sure to have a great day.

 

Regularly declutter and organize your home.  Clutter creates stress.  Stress interrupts a smooth routine.  By simply setting aside time each week to throw away unneeded items, sort through mail, and put items away, you can keep your home organized with a minimal amount of effort.  In the kitchen especially, make sure every item has its own space and educate everyone in the family on where each piece should go.  It will make daily cleanup much easier!

 

Figure out what your most productive hours are and optimize that time.  Are you an early bird?  Do you need a little more time to wake up?  Know when you are the most productive and use it to your advantage.  Don’t schedule meetings or appointments during that time - simply dedicate those hours to working quietly and independently.  You’ll check everything off your to-do list in no time!

 

Speaking of lists, keep a weekly running checklist.  This will help you remember important tasks and give you a rewarding feeling when you check items off the list!  Establish goals at the beginning of each week and write them down.  A to-do list is a great way to stay productive through a busy week.

 

Exercise, exercise, exercise.  Whether it is a 30 minute walk around the neighborhood, or a fitness class at the local gym, find an exercise routine that you enjoy each week.  Exercising is proven to decrease stress, boost energy and allows you to clear your head.

 

Get your furry friends on a schedule too.  A schedule for feeding, walks, playtime, and downtime will give your pets structure and allow you to set expectations for yourself and them!
